The beginning of every month brings important regulatory and compliance changes, and 1 August 2026 is no different. This month is especially significant for taxpayers, businesses, professionals, deductors and GST-registered persons because several important compliance deadlines have either expired or are approaching soon.
If you have not yet filed your Income Tax Return, deduct TDS, or run a GST-registered business, this article will help you understand all the important tax updates applicable from 1 August 2026.
GST E-Way Bill Date Extended
One of the most awaited GST updates was regarding the proposed enhancement in the E-Way Bill system.
However, GSTN has now clarified that the proposed changes have been postponed.
This means:
- Businesses are not required to modify their ERP systems immediately
- Existing E-Way Bill process continues
- GSTN will announce the revised implementation schedule separately
ITR-1 & ITR-2 Due Date is Over
The due date for filing ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2 for Assessment Year 2026-27 was 31 July 2026.
If you have missed this deadline, you can still file your return. However, it will now be treated as a Belated Return.
Last Date for Belated Return
31 December 2026
Although filing is still permitted, several consequences may arise due to the delay.
Possible consequences
- Late filing fee under section 234F (subject to applicable provisions)
- Interest on outstanding tax liability under applicable provisions
- Certain losses cannot be carried forward if the return is not filed within the prescribed due date
- Delay in processing of refund
- Delay in receiving tax refund
Therefore, taxpayers should avoid waiting until the last date and file their returns at the earliest.
ITR-3 & ITR-4 Due Date is Still Available
Not every taxpayer has missed the deadline.
If you are required to file ITR-3 or ITR-4 and fall under the category whose due date is 31 August 2026, there is still sufficient time available.
This generally includes many taxpayers having business or professional income where the applicable due date is 31 August.
Instead of waiting for the last week, taxpayers should complete their compliance early to avoid portal congestion and last-minute mistakes.
Tax Audit Cases – Important Upcoming Deadlines
Businesses and professionals covered under tax audit should also note the upcoming compliance dates.
| Compliance | Due Date |
|---|---|
| Tax Audit Report | 30 September 2026 |
| Income Tax Return (Audit Cases) | 31 October 2026 |
Since tax audit involves preparation of books, reconciliation and financial statements, taxpayers should begin the process well in advance.
Quarter 1 TDS/TCS Return Due Date Has Expired
The due date for filing TDS/TCS Returns for Quarter 1 of FY 2026-27 was 31 July 2026.
If the return is filed after the due date, deductors may be liable for:
- Late filing fee
Businesses should ensure timely filing to avoid unnecessary compliance costs.
Company Compliance Facilitation Scheme Extended Till 31 August 2026
There is good news for companies that have pending ROC compliances.
The Company Compliance Facilitation Scheme (CCFS) 2026 will continue to remain available up to 31 August 2026. This scheme provides an excellent opportunity for companies to complete pending ROC filings with concessional additional fees and obtain specified benefits under the scheme.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) introduced this scheme to encourage companies to regularize long-pending compliances and reduce litigation.
Key Benefits of the Scheme
Under the scheme:
- Companies can file pending ROC forms with reduced additional fees as prescribed.
- Certain eligible dormant companies can avail 50% waiver of additional fees.
- Eligible struck-off companies that have been restored through the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) may also receive specified fee concessions under the scheme.
Since the scheme is scheduled to remain available only up to 31 August 2026, companies should not postpone pending filings until the last moment.
Professionals should also review their client portfolios and identify companies that can still benefit from this one-time compliance opportunity.
The beginning of August 2026 brings several important tax compliance changes.
For salaried taxpayers, the due date for ITR-1 and ITR-2 has ended, and any return filed now will generally be treated as a Belated Return. Business taxpayers should keep an eye on the upcoming due dates for ITR-3, ITR-4, Tax Audit Reports, and Audit Returns. Deductors should also ensure that any pending TDS/TCS Return is filed without unnecessary delay.
At the same time, GST-registered businesses can take some relief from the postponement of the proposed E-Way Bill changes, as no immediate system modifications are required.
Before filing any Income Tax Return, always verify AIS, Form 26AS, and TIS. Spending a few minutes reviewing these documents can help avoid refund delays, incorrect tax calculations, notices, and other compliance issues.
